Album Notes
Released On November 4, 2022 by A&MGhost in the Machine came out in 1981 as the Police's fourth studio album, recorded at AIR Studios in Montserrat and Le Studio in Quebec. Co-produced by Hugh Padgham, it marked a shift for the band, adding saxophones and synthesizers to their usual reggae-rock sound. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and hit #2 on the US Billboard 200, with tracks like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Spirits in the Material World" becoming staples of early '80s playlists. It was a clear signal that the band wasn’t content sticking to a formula, even if their earlier albums had already made them a massive success.
In 2022, the band re-released a limited edition picture disc that shakes up the original tracklist. This version includes three songs that didn’t make the cut back in the day—"I Burn for You," "Once Upon a Daydream," and "Shambelle"—as well as count-ins from Stewart Copeland on several tracks. The tweaks give fans a more behind-the-scenes feel of the recording process while reintroducing some lesser-heard material. It’s not a radical reinvention, but it’s a fresh way to revisit a classic album without too much nostalgia fluff.
