New Vinyl This Week: July 17, 2015

Amazon Prime Day is done and it was a bit of a bust for vinyl. On the plus side, since I didn't spend any money on vinyl yesterday, I've still got money in my vinyl budget to pick up at least one of these new releases out on Friday.

Tame Impala - Currents

The new Tame Impala album has people in a tizzy nad probably for good reason. Following up on the success of Lonerism from 2012, Kevin Parker holed himself up in a beachside shack in a home studio to built out Currents. Metacritic has it scored at 81.

Currents comes in two variants, both double LPs. One is standard black version and the other is a purple and yellow colored version. For some reason, neither version is available on Amazon right now, but Amoeba has it, so we've got you covered.

Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free

I feel like the type of music we get from Isbell favors us vinyl heads. It's slow, soulful, and authentic. Pitchfork didn't give it much love in their review, pegging it at a 5.8. They said this is Isbell's "sparest record yet, with an austere palette dominated by acoustic guitar. The results are noncommittal: not quite folk, not quite country, definitely not rock."

The Chemical Brothers - Born in the Echoes

This is eighth studio album by The Chemical Brothers, but their first in five years. This time around we're blessed with guest performances by St. Vincent, Beck, and Q-Tip. I've got fond memories of driving on Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago with Come With Us blasting on my CD player, but who knows what kind of vinyl memories the new one brings. The Telegraph says that the new album "sounds like heavy metal compared to today's sugar-rush EDM."
